/ʤ/ — the J sound as in just, job, age, bridge

Main spellings (~95%)

⟨j⟩ ~45%

Always /ʤ/ — the most reliable spelling. Common at the start of words.

⟨g⟩ ~28%

Before ⟨e⟩, ⟨i⟩, or ⟨y⟩, the letter ⟨g⟩ often makes /ʤ/ instead of /g/.

The soft G rule: Before ⟨e⟩, ⟨i⟩, or ⟨y⟩, the letter ⟨g⟩ often softens to /ʤ/. Think: general, giant, gym, page, age. But there are exceptions: get, give, girl, tiger — these keep the hard /g/.

⟨ge⟩ ~10%

Word-finally after long vowels and consonants.

⟨dge⟩ ~8%

After short vowels, use ⟨dge⟩.

⟨dg⟩ ~4%

Before suffixes, ⟨dge⟩ may drop the final ⟨e⟩.

GE vs DGE rule: After a short vowel, use ⟨dge⟩: bridge, edge, badge. After a long vowel or consonant, use ⟨ge⟩: age, change, large, strange.

Unusual spellings (~5%)

⟨d⟩

Before ⟨u⟩ in some words, ⟨d⟩ makes /ʤ/ (similar to -ture → /ʧ/).

D before U: In words like "gradual" and "education," the ⟨du⟩ combination often becomes /ʤu/ or /ʤə/ in natural speech. This is similar to how ⟨tu⟩ becomes /ʧ/ in "nature."

⟨di⟩

In a few words, ⟨di⟩ makes /ʤ/ before a vowel.

⟨gg⟩

Rare — only in a few words.

/ʤ/ vs /ʧ/

Don't confuse /ʤ/ with /ʧ/! The /ʤ/ sound is voiced (vocal cords vibrate), while /ʧ/ is voiceless. Compare: joke vs choke, badge vs batch, ridge vs rich.
