/ə/ — the schwa the most common sound in English

What is schwa?

Schwa is the "lazy" unstressed vowel — a short, relaxed sound that any vowel letter can make when it's not stressed.

Key insight: Schwa isn't about spelling — it's about stress. Almost any vowel letter becomes /ə/ when it lands in an unstressed syllable. That's why it has so many different spellings.
